Everything a DIY layout plan needs

No CAD degree, no pro software for thousands of francs — Solplaner does exactly what is needed, and makes it genuinely simple.

📷

Roof photo & scale

Upload a drone photo or aerial image, draw a known distance — and everything is calculated in real metres.

🔲

Panels by drag & drop

Click for one panel, drag for whole fields — with automatic snapping, spacing and free tilt for pitched roofs.

🔌

Cables & earthing

Draw DC+, DC− and earthing with the mouse. Lengths are calculated live — you know exactly what to order.

📊

Live figures

Panel count, kWp, panel area and estimated annual yield — updated instantly with every change.

📄

PDF report

Layout plan plus parts list as a clean A4 PDF — for the scaffolding, the electrician or the material order.

💾

Saved automatically

Your plan stays saved in the browser and can be exported as a file and reopened. With an account, Pro follows you on every device.

How it works

Your plan in three steps

Upload photo & set scale

Drag in the roof photo, draw a reference line over a known length (e.g. the ridge) — calibrated and done.

Lay panels on the roof

Drag across the roof with the panel tool — Solplaner fills the area with realistic panel sizes and spacing.

Draw cables & export

Draw the string runs and earthing, read off cable lengths, export the PDF. Planning done.

Why Solplaner

Plan your solar yourself — realistic, not sugar-coated

Most online calculators take your roof area times a panel size and call it planning. On a flat roof that quickly overestimates the count by double — because racked rows need spacing or they shade each other. Solplaner factors in this row spacing, based on tilt, orientation and the sun angle at your location. You get the number that actually fits on the roof.

🏠

For homeowners

Before the first quote, check for yourself what your roof can deliver — panel count, power and rough annual yield. You go into the consultation informed.

🔧

For self-installers

Plan the layout to scale, read off cable lengths and export the parts list as a PDF — exactly what you need to order.

📐

To scale, not by rule of thumb

Everything is calculated in real metres once you calibrate a known distance. Roof tilt, obstacles like chimneys and skylights, edge margins — all taken into account.

The yield estimate relies on PVGIS, the photovoltaic calculation service of the European Commission. Honestly: Solplaner does not replace professional planning for structural load, detailed shading and grid connection — it is the tool to think through the layout yourself before the pros take over. Built and hosted in Switzerland, without advertising trackers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to plan?

No. Planning starts instantly and without sign-up — your project is saved in the browser. An account is only needed for the Pro purchase, so Pro is available on every device.

Where do I get a roof photo?

Ideally a drone photo straight from above. Aerial imagery also works, e.g. a screenshot from map.geo.admin.ch (Switzerland) or Google Maps — all you need is a known distance for calibration.

Does Solplaner replace a professional?

No — Solplaner is a tool for panel layout and quantity estimation. Structural load, electrical connection and code compliance belong in the hands of professionals; connecting to the grid is the job of a licensed electrician.

Is CHF 29 really one-time?

Yes. Buy once, use forever — including all future features. No subscription, no recurring cost.

How many solar panels fit on my roof?

That is exactly what Solplaner is built for: upload a roof photo, set the scale and drag across the area with the panel tool. Solplaner fills it with realistic panel sizes and spacing and shows the panel count, the kWp rating and the estimated annual yield — in seconds instead of with graph paper.

Can I plan a flat roof with racking?

Yes. On a flat roof, Solplaner factors in the row spacing of the racking — based on tilt, orientation (south or east-west) and the sun angle at your location. Area times panel size otherwise overestimates the count by roughly double; Solplaner shows the number that can actually be built.

How accurate is the yield estimate?

The annual yield estimate is based on PVGIS, the photovoltaic calculation service of the European Commission (JRC). From your location, roof tilt and orientation it derives a realistic figure in kWh per year. It is a planning estimate, not a guarantee — for a binding design, involve a professional.

Does it work without a drone?

Yes. You only need a vertical aerial image. In Switzerland a screenshot from map.geo.admin.ch works perfectly; worldwide Google Maps does the job. All that matters is a known distance in the image — the ridge length or a garage door — so Solplaner can calibrate the scale.
